What can voice lessons do for you? Some common goals we work to meet in voice lessons include: learning basic vocal techniques, expanding range, improving tone, developing a solid repertoire, combating common vocal problems, increasing confidence and dedication, learning to take care of the voice, coaching in artistic interpretation, and advancing musicianship skills.
My program includes instruction in:
- Proper technique, focusing on posture, breath support, and tone production
- How to adequately warm up your voice
- Repertoire in classical, musical theatre, jazz, and rock/pop genres
- Basic theory and ear training for singers
- Performance and interpretation
A typical lesson begins with relaxation and stretching exercises, vocal exercises, and discussion on technique. We spend the remainder of the lesson putting these concepts into practice by working on songs. I also offer instruction in songwriting and composition and am happy to work with singer/songwriters on their own material.
For vocalists with no piano skills, I offer some basic piano instruction to aid in the learning of songs. Upon request, I can offer coaching on microphone technique. I also have a tape recorder, CD player, and guitar in my studio, as well as a music library.
In addition, I offer short-term lessons and coachings for those wanting to prepare or brush up for an upcoming event! For example, I have coached students for musical theatre auditions, performances at weddings, and professional gigs.
In order to schedule on-going lessons, new students are required to schedule an audition, at which they will sing some vocal exercises, go through some basic pitch-matching exercises, and sing a previously prepared song. This audition is free of charge.

My curriculum includes instruction in:
- Technique: Finger agility, speed, and strength; hand position; etc.
- Literature: Classical from Bach to Bartok; popular; musical theatre; religious; folk; basic jazz/ragtime
- Sight-reading: Be able to pick up a piece of music for the first time and play it!
- Theory: Practical keyboard theory including rhythm, circle of fifths, harmony, musical vocabulary
- Interpretation/Performance
- Enjoyment of music!
My curriculum is very child-friendly. I have created a fun and non-threatening environment in which your child can explore and learn about music. Each child is encouraged to learn at his or her own pace, while having fun with musical games and activities. I hand-tailor my curriculum to best match your child's interests and abilities. Instead of using one "method", I have put together a variety of materials that combine to enhance your child's learning process. In this way, I take the traditional dread out of piano lessons and instead make them a fun activity that your child will look forward to each week.
In order to schedule on-going piano lessons, new students are required to schedule an initial evaluation or audition. This meeting gives us a chance to meet and talk about the requirements of piano study. Beginning students will be tested on their readiness to begin piano study, and continuing students will be asked to play a song they have previously learned. This meeting is free of charge.
