Starting Lessons
- New students: A new student must schedule an initial audition or evaluation in order to study with Amy. If accepted into the studio, the new student may try a lesson at the monthly plan rate before deciding whether to continue. The individual fee for this lesson is due at the end of the lesson. The new student should be prepared to let me know his or her plans within 48 hours of the trial lesson to reserve the time slot.
- Students interested in the monthly plan who are beginning mid-month are only responsible for paying for the remainder of lessons in the month.
Regular Weekly Lessons - The Monthly Plan
- The monthly plan is for all students interested in taking regular weekly lessons in piano and/or voice. By participating in this plan, you receive a reserved slot in the weekly teaching schedule.
- Payment for each calendar month should be received by the 1st of the relevant month (cash or check). Please plan on paying for a month of lessons either at the last lesson of the preceding month or by mail. Payment should be for every slot taking place in the month (excluding federal and studio holidays). For instance, if there are five Wednesdays in a month with no holidays, then payment is due for all five lessons at the beginning of the month. Payment received after the 7th of the month is considered to be late, and a $20 late fee will be charged. Charges associated with bounced checks will be passed on to the student.
- There are no lessons on federal holidays or studio holidays (when the instructor is not available); students are not responsible for payment for these days. If a lesson is cancelled due to instructor absence, the lesson fee for that lesson will be credited to the next month or a reschedule given.
- No Shows: If a student is over fifteen minutes late to a lesson and has not phoned to let the instructor know that he is still coming, the lesson time is lost and the instructor may leave the studio.
- If a student doesn't take lessons for a month, their slot may be filled with another student.
- There are no cancellations, no makeups, and no reschedules available. Signing up for a month of lessons is comparable to signing up for a month-long class at a set time. However, you may join the swapping e-mail list, through which students can communicate with one another and arrange "lesson swaps".
- Swapping rules:
1. You can swap with other students as much as you want, and as creatively as you want.
2. Try to be specific in requesting a swap. Remember to include the time and length of your lesson and what other times you wish to swap with. The studio is open on Mondays through Thursdays, so request times on only those days.
3. The instructor is not responsible for arranging any swaps.
4. You can always contact the instructor to arrange a new weekly time slot if your regular schedule changes. If you want a permanent lesson change, the instructor will facilitate this process. Again, the more specific you can be about what times work for you, the better.
- Any student enrolled in the Monthly Plan is free to schedule additional lessons during the month at the same discounted per lesson price.
- The following are Federal or Studio holidays, for which payment is not expected: Martin Luther King Day, President's Day, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Thanksgiving, and two weeks of winter break. In addition, lessons are optional when the studio is open during the summer break and payment for these lessons can be week-by-week, with individual coachings' cancellation rules.
Individual Vocal Coachings
- These coachings are designed for individuals who are not interested in regular weekly study, but need a periodic brush-up or coaching before an event. Examples: a monthly check-up lesson, preparation for auditions, shows, and weddings, adults who travel a great deal, etc.
- Coachings are different from monthly lessons in that they are usually focused on very specific goals. They are more concerned with immediate concerns as opposed to long-term vocal development.
- In order to cancel or reschedule, 48 hours notice must be given or payment for the coaching is still expected. If the vocalist is unable to sing due to serious illness or injury, less notice is acceptable.
- No shows: If a student is over fifteen minutes late to a coaching and has not phoned to let the instructor know that he is still coming, the coaching time is lost and the instructor may leave the studio. The student is still responsible for paying for the session.
- If the instructor is unable to teach the scheduled lesson, the student is not responsible for payment for the missed session.
Pricing
- Monthly plan (one lesson per week, at the same time every week):
$65 per hour lesson
$50 per 45 minute lesson
$35 per 30 minute lesson
(For example, if your lesson is from 3:30-4pm on Tuesdays and there are four Tuesdays in the month, you will pay $140 for the month of lessons. If, however, there are five Tuesdays in that particular month, you will pay $175 for the month of lessons. Cost varies from month to month.)
- Individual Vocal Coaching (after the first session):
$80 for an hour lesson
$60 for a 45 minute lesson
$40 for a 30 minute lesson
Lesson Etiquette
- Students should arrive on time and prepared for their lessons. Students who are late will only receive the remainder of their lesson time.
- Students arriving early for their lessons should wait in the waiting room until the appointed time.
- I ask that parents, siblings, and other adults do not stay for the lesson, as this can be distracting to the student. Exceptions to this rule for one parent can be made.
- Recitals and/or workshops may be offered based on student registration and demand.
Materials
- It is the responsibility of the student and family to obtain assigned materials.
- For piano students:
1. Students should have access to a piano for daily practice. A keyboard is an acceptable substitute, providing that it is full-sized and has touch sensitive keys. Seating must also be arranged so that the pianist's forearms are parallel to the floor.
2. I also recommend that each piano student have access to a metronome. The big mechanical ones are best for younger children; the small electronic ones are an economical (and portable) alternative.
3. In addition to assigned books/pieces, each piano student should bring an assignment book to each lesson, preferably one with staff paper.
- For voice students:
1. I offer a cassette recorder and CD player as a convenience for my students. Please bring CDs and/or blank cassettes as applicable.
2. Voice students should bring a bottle of water into their lessons.
3. Voice students should also check with me to see if they should be bringing a binder of assigned music every week.
I am looking forward to a rewarding course of music study with student and family!
